The English-Speaking Union was founded in New York in 1920 to strengthen relations between the U.S. and other English-speaking nations. The Indianapolis branch was founded in 1949 by Charles J. Lynn. He was followed as president by his wife Dorothy B. Lynn and Robert S. Ashby. The branch provides scholarships for British Commonwealth students to attend Indiana University and for Marion County (Ind.) teachers to study at British universities.
